Knowing how your customer thinks would be a good way to know what exactly they are searching for online.
Are they typing the words “dallas wedding vendor” into Google, or is it specifically “dallas photographer”? Unfortunately we don’t ever know exactly what our specific customer is looking for, but by using certain online resources and studying our customer we can understand a little bit more. Put yourself in the customer’s position. If they are looking for some inspiration of a wedding that was at a certain venue or even used certain colors, you want them to find you if you have an image that might be of interest.
So….name all of your images accordingly:
For example, brides don’t search for an image named “smith wedding 081010” they search for “gray_pink_wedding_inspiration”.
Speak their language:
Use the most frequent searched terms (not the terms that you use). Don’t be afraid to ask your past customers what they searched for. A great resource to check out what your target market is searching for is: Google Adwords
This is an excellent free service that can help you see how many searches (locally and nationally) are being made with you keyword/phrase and how competitive that word or phrase is (how many other sites are trying to target that phrase).
Because most general keywords are very competitive in many cases it is smarter to choose a key phrase which is more specific.
For example rather than using the keyphrase: branding or brand identity I would want to use Dallas Branding or Dallas Brand Identity (ranked #2 )….see the results in the search below
or how about invitations or dallas invitations (ranked #1):
dallas blog design (ranked #1)
and lastly dallas webdesign (ranked #3)
So now you are probably thinking it would be great to be in the first few positions for all of your key terms but you just don’t know how to get there. Thank you to all who came out last night to the Wedding Party Studio event, I hope that the top 10 tips will help you want to get started on your social media and search engine optimization. I know I talked to a lot of you last night who understood the importance having the nice website, blog, and overall social media campaign, but your biggest concern was having the time to dedicate towards it. So, here’s my advice to help you figure out how to manage it all a little better :
Be Selective. There are a TON of social networks (hover over my “Share ” button on the right to see a few of the most popular networks) out there to participate in, so unless you have someone managing your social media for you, you will need to pick what’s right for you. You don’t necessarily need to use Delicious or Digg just because you hear someone else talking about it, if Facebook, Twitter and your blog is all that you can handle that’s better than none at all. If you tried to tackle every social network out there it would become your full time job.
Schedule time for social networking. Like anything else in life, you need to schedule time to manage all of your social networks. For me, it seems to work best to try to write up to 5 posts at a time on the weekend and schedule them to go out once a day throughout the week. That way if I stumble upon something interesting or have a picture to share with you I can add it throughout the week. Realistically this doesn’t always happen, you’ll find me up at 5 am writing posts quite often but in any case I like to do it in the morning and give people a chance to read throughout the day.
Consider automation. Using tools like Ping.fm or networkedblogs can be very helpful and save you a lot of time. These tools allow you to integrate your social networks so that you can post on one and a automatic post will appear on all of your other networks that you have synced.
I can’t say this enough, study your web analytics. Know where your traffic is coming from, this can save you so much time in the long run when you start eliminating or posting less frequently in places that aren’t generating much buzz. But do give it time, don’t stop posting after a month because you’re not seeing much change, people need time to find out about you.
If you haven’t done this yet, click on the big orange button the top of this page that says RSS, this way you can follow my blog and keep up with all of the tips and see some fun design along the way!

This week is the start of a new series to help small business owners understand modern marketing. The real action starts tomorrow with the kick-off presentation that I will be giving at the Wedding Party Studio about all the top 10 modern marketing tips, but as a prequel I have put together a list of a few explanations of terms that you will hear me refer to over the course of this series.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO is a process that is used to increase visibility and presence in the search engine rankings. A good search engine optimization campaign gives search engines a road map to the site and helps them understand what kind of traffic should be directed towards that site. When you move up in the ranks when using Search Engine Optimization you stay in what’s referred to as the organic area (as opposed to the paid search area).
What is a blog and why do I need one?
A blog is an interactive site (like the one you are on right now) that allows you to use a simple platform to edit and add content to on a regular basis. Because it is an ever changing site it helps your SEO ranking, helps create a feeling of community with your readers and keeps them coming back for more. Once your blog is online and ready-to-use, it is a free service and direct line of communication.
What is Social Media Marketing?
Social Media Marketing is all about using a mixture of all social media, from Facebook and Twitter to your blog, Flickr and YouTube, there are a ton of different sites out there that can contribute to your social media campaign. They all work together to share content, help you gain exposure and familiarity with your readers.
What is Social Media Management?
Social Media Management is an alternative to managing all of your own social media. As you have probably already discovered it is very time-consuming to manage your blog posts, facebook posts, and tweet on a regular basis. So Doodle Dog offers a monthly alternative to doing it all yourself.
