Get To Know Rose of Sharon:

How long have you been in business? Since April, 1998 What do you do? Create custom floral designs for any and all of life’s events. Most of our work is for weddings at this time, but we consider anything planned an event. Why did you start your business? I fell in love with floral design during college. After working for various shops, I recognized that it was the event work that really excited me. Coupled with the knowledge that I wanted to be the boss, it was a natural fit to start my own event-focused floral studio. Why ‘Rose of Sharon?’ ‘Rose of Sharon’ is the common name for Althea, the flowering shrub for which I was named. What is unique about your business? Our goal is to reduce the stress that comes with planning any event. We want our clients to be partners in the process, not just customers. Honesty, integrity, confidence and commitment are extremely important to the way we work. We believe everyone should be treated like WE want to be treated. Oh, and we’re also creative and artistic. Why did you decide to work with Doodle Dog? I was looking for a web re-design and the interview from the Sage blog caught my attention. I liked the samples on Doodle Dog’s website, and Nikki’s philosophy and approach to clients seemed to mesh with my own. Tell us about your family. I’m recently married (Jan. 1) and have a 12yr old step-daughter. That’s the immediate family. I’m also very close to my two sisters, parents and my husband’s family. Do you have any pets? What are their names? Of course! Two dogs, Laney and Putter; and a mouse, Dodger. My husband and step-daughter also have various reptiles. We’re considering getting a kitten soon, as well. Where do you like to shop? On-line. Also Banana Republic. Where do you find inspiration? A lot of inspiration comes from my clients. I like the challenge of meeting their requirements. But I also get inspiration from other florists—I appreciate their talents, and from nature. That sounds a bit blah; I grew up in a very rural area with lots of trees, wildflowers, and general ‘nature.’ And I actually have a hard time picking flowers because, to me, a flower looks best in it’s natural setting. Much of my design style tends to mimic nature, letting the flowers and materials be themselves, but arranged in beautiful combinations.
